ABOUT ST LUKE'S LANGUAGE CLUB
Languages have always been part of St Luke's Junior School in Brighton and every year more and more links are being set up with schools around the world.
The current Language Club was started in 2006 by Sarah Carroll, who was
very quickly joined by Lynne Cahill. The club now offers French and Spanish
lessons to the children at a breakfast club and after-school club. We will be teaching German for the first time this term.
We have already taught over 100
children about the language, culture and geography of either the French
or Spanish-speaking worlds. This term alone, we have had nearly 100 children interested in learning a language (that is over a quarter of the total number of children in the school) ... we are so pleased to see so many budding linguists at St. Luke's.
Parents of children from French Club who have gone on to secondary schools in Brighton this year have said:
-
"he is doing so well in French. He loves it and his new teacher is very impressed."
- "the teacher doesn't quite know what to do with her - she keeps putting her hand up! It's the fact that she knows all about the French culture and where French is spoken around the world that is really helping her too."
- "lots of the children in her new class are just starting with 'bonjour'. She can say full sentences like 'je voudrais parler francais avec toi ce soir'. I expect she will be doing fast-track French at GCSE - mostly due to the great start she got at primary school."
